The Technology and its Evolution

Digital Rights Management (DRM) is defined as “a systematic approach to copyright protection for digital media.” DRM's prime objective is to stop illegal duplication and distribution of intellectual property such as audio and video, literary articles, computer software, etc...

The Debate

In the 2000s, as an increasing number of companies started to adopt DRM technologies, debate on the need for DRM intensified.

While supporters of DRM argued that the technology would restrict the illegal market, anti DRM groups argued against the technology, saying that it was unethical to restrict consumer usage. Analysts were divided in their opinion on the extent of restrictions required to protect the interests of users as well as content providers...

Outlook

According to newspaper reports in mid 2008, sales of Blu-ray Discs and Blu-ray players, launched in 2006, did not pick up to the extent that was expected. Analysts said that one of the main reasons for this could have been the restrictive DRM techniques used with these discs.
